Two clocks start when a Virginia speeding conviction is entered, and they run for different lengths of time. Demerit points — three, four or six, depending on how far over the limit the driver was — count against the licence for two years from the date of the offense. The conviction itself sits on the DMV driving record for far longer: five years for most speeding, eleven for a reckless driving conviction.
A third possibility is the one most pages miss. A photo speed monitoring summons mailed to a vehicle's owner under § 46.2-882.1 is not a conviction at all, is not part of the driver's operating record and may not be used by an insurer.
