Fines & Costs
What a speeding ticket costs in Virginia: the $6-per-mph fine formula, the fixed court fee, and the insurance cost that outlasts both.

A Virginia speeding ticket is priced by a formula, not by a judge's mood. Va. Code § 46.2-878.3 sets a prepayable fine of $6 for every mile per hour over the limit for most ordinary speeding, with higher per-mile amounts in a highway work zone or a school crossing zone, and § 16.1-69.48:1 fixes the court costs that are added to it — $51 on a traffic infraction, $61 on a misdemeanor.
Those two numbers explain almost every speeding bill in the Commonwealth, and they are why the total on the summons rarely matches the round figures quoted on other sites. The pages below work the formula through, once as a method and once as a single worked example, and then cover what the conviction costs after the courthouse.
